Slimey/syrupy consistency

My water kefir has thickened up during my first ferments. It doesn't smell bad, nor is it cloudy. It's almost like a slimey drizzle when it is strained. I've read something about too much sugar, but if anything I use less sugar than grains ~1/2 cup of each in a half gallon jar. The grains are firm and appear healthy and they are multiplying. Any suggestions?
Would also like to know how to "feed" them other things for their health ☺

I've gotten slimy thick water kefir when I use too many minerals and its cold. I've been doing water kefir for a while now and it never happens in the summer time no matter what I do. Are you using a very dark mineral sugar? If so try use part white sugar. Or are you adding any other supplements or minerals?
