Are my kefir grains contaminated?

Postby Alessandro » Wed Dec 16, 2015 4:44 am

Hello! I'm not a native american, so any english mistakes, please forgive me.

I have 2 concerns about my culture:

I've received my dehydrated kefir grains about a month ago, and they are still very small. Looks like they didn't grow nothing since they arrived here. I deal with them in a 80.6°F - 86°F (27°C - 30°C), 1 dessert spoon for 300 mL of milk for 24 hours. It isn't normal, is it?

Second: With less than 24 hours, like around 12 hours, my kefir milk is SO consistent that I can flip the jar in more than 45 degrees that the milk just don't move. I've searched all the internet looking for something similar and nothing so far.

If my kefir is contaminated, it would explain the two facts above. So am I right about my suspicon?

If you guys want any image or videos about that, I have them all, just wasn't able to put in this post. If someone wants it in order to help, please contact me via private message.

I'll be very thankful for any help!

Hi Alessandro

I don't think there's any reason to suspect contamination. Dried grains are known to sometimes have issues with growth or can take a while to start growing. The thickness can vary and many people love thick kefir as it tends to be more yogurt like. I would suspect contamination if it smells or tasted really bad or if anything is growing on the surface. If you don't like the result, try to compare with live grains if its possible to get where you are. Live grains tend to do better.
