Help is my kefir grains dead?

Hi there! If someone can please help me since I am new to kefir. I was given milk kefir grains (and water kefir) as a gift on my birthday in September. I made the first batch from the packet. And it was successful. And then made another batch. Unfortunately I made those first two batches in our vacation condo. I had it in the refrigerator. But then I forgot to take it home with me. And then it stayed there for circumstances I couldn't control until this morning. I made a fresh new batch, but then I noticed all of the grains look almost like the consistency of ground cheese in some watery substance. One of my friends said to just throw it away, but then again she is only drinks kombucha and doesn't know anything about kefir. I still went on and did a batch hoping I can resuscitate it. Can someone help me please if it's worth resuscitating these milk kefir grains? And if so, how can I know it's still alive and fermenting? I'm really sad :(
