Re: First time

Hi Kelly After you do a couple batches, the grains will grow and you can either keep adding more milk each batch if you are looking to make a lot of kefir or if you don't want to waste milk, store the excess grains in the fridge and continue to do the amount of milk you desire. Once you get going, y...

Re: Grains still fermenting, but not growing

Yeah, I agree, raisins didn't seem to do much with white sugar when I tried it. Also try rinsing and resting them in the fridge for several days. That helped my grains when they were really sluggish.

Re: First time

Hi Kelly No problem at all! You will get the hang of it soon. Milk kefir grains don't grow very fast, so its possible you might be confusing the curds with the grains, especially since you mentioned that it was overfermented. Curds are like globs of fat that occur when there's a lot of fermentation,...

Re: Choice of strainers/sieve??

I use a similar type of large hole colander for my water kefir for easy pouring. For milk kefir I like to use a fine mesh strainer though. I'm scared to lose the little immature small grains with milk kefir. Not so much with my water kefir since they grow so fast.

Re: Berkey water filter & tropical location

Funny enough, I've tried the Berkey water filter system and the grains did not like it. It felt like they were slowly dying. I don't know why. You would think the grains would do well with it. Maybe switching back may help. I think the grains originated from mexico so they usually do okay in the hea...

Re: Ignored Kombucha

Oh wow, those are huge. You could cut them up and have a feast for dinner. I've left my kombucha for a while and its amazing how it just keeps growing until there's no liquid left.

Re: Added Molasses

Hi, Generally molasses won't slow down the ferment. It typically speeds it up due to increased yeast activity. Sometimes though if there's just too much heavy sugar it can make the overall ferment slow. You mentioned that you took out some of the sugar. It's possible that if you took out too much su...

Re: Fermenting without grains?

It's probably just the little bits of kefir and what's left on the jar that's fermenting the milk. It's amazing how much it can ferment without any grains. It's still mostly kefir, but its likely more yeasty then what's typical and will get more yeasty overtime. I would recommend new grains as it pr...

Re: Are my kefir grains contaminated?

Hi Alessandro I don't think there's any reason to suspect contamination. Dried grains are known to sometimes have issues with growth or can take a while to start growing. The thickness can vary and many people love thick kefir as it tends to be more yogurt like. I would suspect contamination if it s...

Re: New to Kefir

Hi! 1. 1 tbs to 1 cup is a good starting point, but once they get going, 1 tablespoon can do about 4 cups of milk. A little bit of left over kefir is fine and good, but too much may mess up the next batch. 2. If you have any dogs, cats or chickens, they may love it. Or you can try baking or cooking ...
