Hello, has anyone had experience with kefir grain and tannin's in well water? ( tannin's is a yellow/orange stain in the water from decayed vegetation many years ago)Is Tannin's harmful to Kefir grain?

I’m a new member too. I have gastrointestinal problems so I can’t drink my water kefir (too much lactic acid) so I just eat the grains from my “grain farm.”

Does anyone else have the same story?

Totally new to this forum. I tried making kefir over 8 years ago with coconut milk. I enjoyed it but my young (at the time) daughters did not like it. I gave it up after a while not knowing or understanding what I was giving up! I don't have any current health issues but being 52 I don't want them to creep up on me. I started with sourdough bread back in June. That is going pretty well. Then I found the Traditional Cooking School and learned a LOT from them even if it was a bit expensive. Now I am onto kefir again. I just received my second set of grains I ordered from Amazon. The first ones just fizzeled out, became smaller and smaller and was not fermenting the milk. I will see what these new grains do for me, but if they don't do well I will order another set from Yemoos! I love their concept of adopting the grains! They will turn into family members! The information on their site is amazing and overwhelming at the same time! I want to try all of it! The ginger beer might be my next conquest!
This forum looks like a great way to connect and trouble shoot and share stories. Once I get my grains producing, I want to share with my parents and my sisters. EVERYONE can benefit from the old ways of keeping food and making it better for us!
So I do have one question for all of you......I work full time, we run a towing and auto repair shop and I also do nails part time at a retirement home. What is the best way to "play" with all of these "friends" and not get overwhelmed? Can I add ginger beer to my sourdough and kefir without having to do too much??? I don't want to throw too much on my plate at once.

I received a scoby and sourdough starter today, after a break of several years (long story). I'm glad to be back. I see there are new cultures now that I'd like to try. Yemoos, you're the greatest!

Hi Everyone,
I'm Gina from Ohio and I've been making dairy kefir for 6 months. I've shared grains already with my sister in another state. Made my first kefir cheese to make ranch dip and it was delicious. Back to kefir, my favorite so far is creamsicle kefir. I bought a tube of frozen orange juice concentrate and add a tablespoon to finished 2nd fermented kefir just before consuming it, along with vanilla and raw honey and a little stevia. It tastes like a fizzy liquid creamsicle pop. Excellent stuff. Also love making pumpkin kefir and add pumpkin spices and honey and vanilla. These wonderful tasting drinks end up being a meal replacement. I've also used whey with sweetener, a splash of diet 7 up and orange concentrate, very refreshing and pleasant.

Welcome Bonnie! I do the swirl too! I am always worried any grains sitting on top might dry out. Probably not but doesn't hurt!

Hi everyone. My name is Bonnie. I live in North Carolina. In the interests of better digestive health, I got some grains from a friend and began making my own kefir. So now many of my close friends make their own kefir. I almost always keep it in a dark cupboard in my kitchen to ferment. If I have to go out of town for a week or two, I put in fresh goat milk and store it in the fridge. I also give the jar a little swirl to swirl the kefir around and make sure it has enough air. I don't know if that's as useful in reality as it seems to be, but I like tending my little grains and helping them to thrive.

Best of luck for ever-improving health for your daughter. Great idea to start making your own cultured foods for her. I've been making Kefir for about two years now, and just love it.
